NOAA’s 2007 Marianas Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program Mapping Updates.
6/11/2007

As the GIS Specialist for NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center’s (PIFSC) Coral Reef Ecosystem Division’s (CRED) Pacific Islands Benthic Habitat Mapping Center (PIBHMC), I will be joining you all to discuss the mapping that is occurring during NOAA’s 2007 Marianas Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program cruise. We are aboard the NOAA ship Hi’ialakai and working with a survey launch, R/V Acoustic Habitat Investigator (AHI).
I will explain our methods for collecting and processing multibeam data. Then, I will review the areas at each location that we surveyed this year (with reference to previous years’ data). Some of the key features and priority sites will be highlighted. You will see an overview of the bathymetry (depth) maps and the expected backscatter (intensity of acoustic return) maps. A large goal in these meetings is to let you all know what type and quality of data, in particular areas of interest, you can expect to come from the mapping portion of this cruise. Importantly, I’d like to get comments from you to make sure we serve the data in a user friendly way when they are processed and ready for publication.
This will also be a good time for you to raise general management or data sharing concerns (having to do with just the multibeam data) that I could pass on to my supervisors, chief of CRED and/or the director of PIFSC.
